Healthy Decisions is an after school program that educates and empowers youth with the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions for themselves. Through discussions, activities, and role-plays, the group facilitators create a safe learning environment for participants to share and learn. Topics covered in the group include overviews of reproductive anatomy, STDs, birth control, healthy relationships, teen pregnancy prevention, dealing with media pressures, self-esteem and communication skills. Through these sessions, participants develop the critical thinking skills and confidence to make better choices.
Healthy Decisions is a eight-session program that consists of health education, activities and a reflection component. Below is the list of the sessions included in this program: Session 1: Introductions/Female & Male Anatomy Session 2: STD's/STI's Session 3: Birth Control Session 4: Teen Pregnancy Session 5: Healthy Relationships Session 6: Media Pressures/Sex in the Media Session 7: Self Esteem/Communication Session 8: Review/Graduation Fresno Barrios Unidos also helps increase communication between parents and youth. Fresno Barrios Unidos hosts an event which includes presentations for parents on how to Effectively Communicate with your kids, STDs' and Birth Control. Activities in the Healthy Decisions Program Once the youth have completed the 9 session program, they receive a gift card and certificate and continue participating with Fresno Barrios Unidos community outreach events and peer to peer education programs.
